How and Why Physics Wallah Grew?

While many competitors focus on premium pricing and cater to a limited, higher-tier audience (around 10-15%), Physics Wallah focuses on affordability. Their lower pricing strategy allows them to tap into the vast majority (85-90%) of students who might not otherwise have access to quality education. This unique approach has proven to be a major advantage, making Physics Wallah an exception in the edtech landscape.

Alakh Pandey – Early Life and Career

Born in Prayagraj, India, Alakh Pandey’s path wasn’t always smooth. Though he started on the Mechanical Engineering track, financial difficulties forced him to drop out. However, Pandey didn’t let that be the end. He started small, tutoring sixth-graders, and soon discovered a passion for teaching.

Taking advantage of the digital age, Alakh Pandey launched his YouTube channel “Physics Wallah” in 2016. His engaging style and knack for clearly explaining complex concepts resonated with millions. He didn’t stop there, expanding his platform further with the Physics Wallah app in 2020.

Alakh Pandey’s dedication to free educational content was game-changing. From a YouTube Channel to a Unicorn 

In 2016, with a dream and a tight budget of Rs 30,000, Alakh Pandey started a journey that would change the educational landscape for many. With just a smartphone camera, a tripod, a whiteboard, and his passion for teaching, he launched his YouTube channel, PhysicsWallah. 

Alakh, a former coaching institute teacher, couldn’t afford fancy equipment, but his heart overflowed with enthusiasm. He wanted to reach students, particularly those from underprivileged backgrounds, and offer them quality education at no cost. His lessons, focusing on Physics and Chemistry (except the inorganic part), were engaging and accessible, filled with his infectious enthusiasm and a touch of theatrics. 

In a recent interview, Alakh Pandey stated “I couldn’t become an actor, so I became one through teaching. It’s like storytelling, and I get to see the excitement in their eyes, the confusion, and the ‘aha!’ moment when they understand a difficult concept. That keeps me going.” Within a year, his channel had already amassed 10,000 subscribers. What began as a mere YouTube channel would soon blossom into a much larger movement, making quality education accessible to millions. 

PW App: A Promise Made to be Kept

Reaching 50,000 YouTube subscribers in May 2018 was a big milestone for Alakh. Excited, he shared a dream with his students: a dedicated learning platform offering physics, chemistry, and math. While creating this platform proved too large a task to tackle solo, he found other ways to support his students. He launched a website with study materials like notes and assignments. His engaging YouTube channel continued to be a source of learning until the pandemic hit in 2020. It was then, with the world seemingly on hold, that his students once again brought up his platform dream, reigniting a spark in him. 

Prateek Maheshwari – The Man Friday of PW

As the lockdown extended, offline coachings had to shut their doors. Expensive online alternatives were the only option. Here Prateek Maheshwari enters into the scene, and the fate of Physics Wallah changes forever. The two friends, connected since 2018, decided to join forces to launch a platform. In May 2020, their dream became reality. They created the PW app, offering students a complete curriculum for competitive exams. Alakh, a college dropout who had to “prove himself”, single-handedly handled the content initially.

The launch wasn’t smooth really. The app crashed under the unexpected weight of 50,000 students on the very first live class. Alakh remembers, “Prateek and his team never anticipated such a huge response.” They kept working, fixing the issues and ensuring the app ran smoothly. Alakh’s initial investment? Rs 15 lakh, earned from his YouTube channel’s ad revenue. It was a testament to his dedication and the power of their vision that turned the investment into a 1 billion dollar vision.
